Psoriasis of the scalp
Scalp psoriasis, also known as psoriasis of the scalp, is a chronic skin condition characterized by excessive flaking of the skin on the scalp. It is one of the most common forms of psoriasis and can be bothersome due to itching, redness, and scaling of the skin. Although scalp psoriasis is not contagious, it can significantly impact the quality of life of patients.

Description of the problem
The causes of scalp psoriasis are not fully understood, but it is associated with an immune system disorder that causes excessive proliferation of the epidermis. Instead of the normal renewal cycle in which old skin cells are replaced by new ones, the skin cells in people with psoriasis accelerate this process, leading to a buildup of dead cells on the skin’s surface.
Symptoms of scalp psoriasis typically include redness of the scalp, excessive scaling, a white, silvery, or gray-brown color, and itching. Sometimes there may also be pain or a burning sensation on the scalp. These symptoms can be worsened by stress, weather changes, infections, or trauma to the scalp.
Treatment
Treatment for scalp psoriasis can involve a variety of methods, depending on the severity of symptoms and the individual needs of the patient. The most commonly used methods include shampoos and preparations containing anti-psoriatic ingredients such as salicylic acid, sulfur, or tar, which help to clear away excess dead skin cells and reduce flaking. In addition, the use of corticosteroid preparations can help reduce inflammation and relieve itching.
In some cases, when scalp psoriasis is more severe, oral medications or light therapy (phototherapy) may be necessary. It is also important to avoid factors that aggravate symptoms, such as stress, smoking, or poor diet. If you have difficulty controlling the symptoms of scalp psoriasis, it is recommended to consult a dermatologist, who can recommend appropriate treatment and adapt it to the individual needs of the patient. With proper medical care, most cases of scalp psoriasis can be effectively controlled and the patient’s quality of life can be improved.
