Hair loss, alopecia (areata)

Hair loss, alopecia (areata)

Hair loss, also known as alopecia areata, is a type of scalp condition that is characterized by the sudden appearance of oval or round bald patches on the scalp. It is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own hair follicles, causing hair growth to stop in the affected areas.

Description of the problem

The causes of alopecia areata are not fully understood, but there are various factors that may be associated with its occurrence. Genetic predisposition, immunological factors, stress, viral infections, and other autoimmune disorders may all contribute to the development of the condition. Although alopecia areata can occur at any age, it is more often diagnosed in young people, often during adolescence or young adults.

Symptoms of alopecia areata include the sudden appearance of round or oval bald patches on the scalp, which may gradually enlarge. The skin in the balding area may be smooth and free of visible signs of inflammation, although there may be slight redness. The hair around the patches is usually healthy and undamaged, which distinguishes alopecia areata from other forms of hair loss.

Treatment

Treatment of alopecia areata is usually complicated and involves a variety of methods, depending on the stage of the disease and the individual needs of the patient. The most commonly used therapeutic methods include topical steroid therapy, i.e. the use of creams or ointments containing corticosteroids, and UV light therapy. In addition, steroid injections can be used directly to the affected areas of the scalp to stimulate hair growth.

In some cases, when traditional treatments are ineffective, more advanced therapies such as immunosuppressive therapy or biologics can be used. Psychological support can also be important for patients with alopecia areata, as this disease can significantly affect their well-being and quality of life. With the right treatment and support, many patients can regain their hair and improve their well-being.
