Lymphatic edema

Lymphatic edema

Lymphedema, also known as lymphedema, is an excessive accumulation of lymph fluid in tissues, leading to swelling. It is usually the result of a disorder of the lymphatic system, which can occur as a result of damage or blockage of lymphatic vessels, preventing the lymph fluid from flowing freely and draining. Lymphedema can affect various parts of the body, but most often occurs in the lower limbs, arms, and face.

Description of the problem

The causes of lymphedema can be varied, but usually include disorders of the lymphatic system, which can be congenital or acquired. In the case of acquired causes, lymphedema can result from trauma, surgery, radiation therapy, infections, tumors, skin inflammation, hormonal changes (e.g. during pregnancy), chronic stress, or excessive strain on the limbs. In the case of congenital causes, lymphedema can result from malformations of the lymphatic system, such as Turner syndrome or Noonan syndrome.

Symptoms can be varied, but most often include visible swelling and thickening of the skin, a feeling of heaviness or tightness in the limbs, changes in the shape of the limbs, difficulty moving, pain, tingling, itching, and susceptibility to skin infections. Lymphedema can be a source of physical and emotional discomfort.

Treatment

Lymphedema treatment usually requires a multifaceted approach that includes both symptom control and the elimination of the causes. There are various treatment methods that can help reduce them and improve the patient’s quality of life. The most commonly used methods include: compression therapy, which involves wearing special compression bands or tights, physiotherapy, lymphatic massage, physical exercise, avoiding exposure to excessive stress, and proper skin care.

In the case of lymphedema caused by hormonal disorders or diseases of the lymphatic system, the doctor may recommend drug treatment or hormone therapy. In the case of chronic or recurrent lymphedema, more advanced treatment methods may be recommended, such as laser therapy, surgical removal of vascular blockages, or gene therapy. With proper treatment and regular medical care, most cases of lymphedema can be effectively controlled, improving the patient’s comfort and quality of life.
